I know that my New Year’s resolution was to write blog entries more often, but I have a good excuse. I’ve been busy reading a book called, “Physics and the Art of Dance“, by Kenneth Laws. I thought I’d take this opportunity to share some of what I’ve learned.

Usually you see shorter dancers perform the petite allegro parts (very quick jump combinations). There is a reason for this. When the tempo of the music is fast, there isn’t enough time for a tall person (with larger feet) to jump high enough to pointe their feet. It’s physically impossible. No matter how hard a dancer tries, they will not be able to complete the jumps with pointed feet, unless you slow the music down.

It does make sense when you think about it. As a dance teacher, I must keep this in mind.
