It’s the end of the year and a time most of us reflect and set goals for the New Year. I’ve read several articles about the top New Year’s resolutions, and all of them had something about getting fit, being healthier, or losing weight. And those that attend a gym on a regular basis will agree that when January rolls around, the facility is packed!
If only we could stick with our resolutions. According to a study by the University of Scranton, only 8 percent of New Year’s resolutions ever come to fruition. Typically the gyms see a drop in attendance by mid-February.
But why? There is a lot Valentine’s candy around then, but I feel there is a different reason. Many people pick an activity because they are told that they should exercise. And many choose the most robust, guaranteed to lose pounds and inches workouts. But what if you don’t enjoy that activity? Even if you do get results, will you continue with it? Probably not.
I’m speaking from experience. I once tried forcing myself to take a fitness class that I didn’t enjoy. Somehow I’d always find a legitimate excuse to not attend the workout. If I was the least bit tired, I didn’t go. Lately I’ve had the opportunity to take lots of ballet classes and somehow I always go, even if I’m tired.
So, I approach things a little different now. Because I love dancing, I tend to choose new fitness classes that involve some type of dance. And somehow, I always go to those class. I’ve found that JazzContemporary Dance works my body differently than Ballet. And so does the Dance Fitness class. How do I know they work my body differently, because I’m sore after taking them! (The good kind of sore.)
A fitness expert might look at my body and suggest I take a more rigorous boot camp type class. One that has lots of cardio and upper body workout. Nope, one of those classes would just make me miserable. In my opinion, it’s better to take classes that I enjoy. Otherwise I’ll be on the couch or at the computer!
So, what excites me and motivates me to take a class is different than what might work for you. That’s why I’ve tried to offer a mix of classes and times that are available to you at Albany Dance & Fitness.
Find something you love to do and maybe your motivational challenge will be resolved.
A Happy and Healthy New Year to you all!
