The holiday shopping craze is almost here. My husband has asked me for my wishlist so I did some research. I always love getting dance-related items as gifts and thought that the dancer on your list may enjoy some of the ideas I came across.
Videos
First Position – I saw this movie at the Saratoga Film Forum Dance Festival and would love to see it again! It’s a documentary about young dancers who prepare and compete in the prestigious Youth America Grand Prix ballet competition. There is some fabulous dancing plus it gives you a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to prepare for the competition.
Singin’ in the Rain 60th Anniversary Release– This classic movie has been digitally remastered to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its release. It is available in DVD or Blu-ray. There is also a special collectors edition that includes both formats, a 48 page hard cover production book with never-before-seen memos and photos, four hours of bonus content, theatrical poster reproductions, and a custom full-size umbrella.
Books
Where Snowflakes Dance and Swear: Inside the Land of Ballet – A dancer friend of mine told me that this book is excellent. The author, Stephen Marnes, was granted access to Pacific Northwest Ballet during one of its seasons and the book gives you an idea of what really goes into getting a ballet onstage.
Not sure? Try the following gift certificates:
Dance Supplies
Discount Dance Supply – This online store has a wide selection of dance apparel, shoes, videos, and costumes. Gift cards are available online.
Saratoga Dance Etc – This store was founded by Leslie Roy-Heck, former soloist with NYC Ballet, so she knows what dancers need/want. And if you live in the Capital Region, this is the best store to get fitted for pointe shoes. Any dancer would be happy to receive a gift card for this store.
Massage
Massage – Dancers’ bodies get a workout and the muscles can get very tight. A massage is necessary, but we don’t always treat ourselves to one. My favorite is Kristen at I Knead a Massage, but the dancer on your list may already have a preference. I would suggest that you find out first, since dancers are very particular when it comes to their bodies.
Dance Classes (Capital Region Area)
Albany Dance & Fitness – Gift cards are good for any dance class for adults and teens (except Belly Dance). If you prefer, you can purchase a class card good for specific classes.
I hope that this helps. Please share any other gift suggestions for the dancer. (I might want to add something to my wishlist.)
